Élodie von Engel

エロディ・フォン・エンゲル

Soft spoken Noble

Profile

Born in Imperial Year 1162, she is Duke Engel's fifth child, and only daughter. Born crestless, she and the youngest of her brothers often took the brunt of the neglect and abuse from their mother. For most of her life, Élodie had been completely isolated from the world, as her mother would not allow her to come out whenever she had any guests in the manor, some who would stay for weeks on end. Because of this, she had no friends other than her stuffed animals during her childhood, and very few other members of the nobility knew of her existence. Her brothers taught her magic and combat from a young age so she would be able to enroll in the Officer's Academy when she came of age. At 18 years old she was finally allowed to attend, with the only caveat being that she had to be accompanied by a servant named Winston Gerontlus, to make sure she would not fall out of line, though she still managed to sneak out of the servant's view a lot of the time.

Warning: Spoilers ahead

Crimson Flower RouteAfter Edelgard declares war on the church of Seiros, she joins the Black Eagles Strike Force in order to remain at her friends' side. She later returns to the Engel manor in order to seek support for Edelgard's cause from her brothers. There, she confronts her mother and takes control of the Engel house, while her father disappears entirely.

Silver Snow RouteInitially, she remains at lady Edelgard's side, fighting against the church, but can be spared and persuaded into joining the army after being bested in combat. She fights alongside the knights afterwards, despite her clear distrust of the church.

Post war (All routes)After the war, she settles in the Engel manor, taking over as duchess and getting ready to finally publish her family's archives in full and continue her ancestor's legacy, only to find herself becoming sick and sluggish, becoming the last victim of her family's curse. Knowing her end was near, she starts looking for someone to carry on her duties.

The Engel Family's history

During the War of Heroes, it is said that a family approached Saint Cethleann, their only daughter having been struck by a debilitating illness, slowly and painfully draining the life out of her, with the girl having become unable to move on her own. Both parents begged Cethleann to save their daughter, promising that they'd pay any price for it, as long as their only child could live.Saint Cethleann healed the child from her ailment, giving her a blessing, the crest of Saint Cethleann now embedded in her blood. Relieved that their child was no longer in danger or pain, the family kindly thanked the Saint, and became allies to her cause.Later in life, Aoife, the woman whose life had been saved by the saint, joined the fight herself, and later helped in the aftermath of the War of Heroes, being granted the title of Duchess within the Empire and founding House Engel, with a small territory near Hevring.Lady Aoife never married, although she had a lover whom she had two children with, the first of which became the heiress to their house. Because of this, it became a tradition that women would be the ones to lead their noble house.Because of her direct knowledge regarding the events of the War of Heroes, Aoife was perplexed when the stories that were later spread by the by the church didn't match. Knowing that she owed her life to Seiros' and her allies, she decided not to voice her concerns regarding the revisions to history, instead keeping written journals that documented the truth, a tradition kept by the heiresses of the house to this day. This tradition eventually grew into what is known as the Engel archives, which also grew to harbor all manner of scrolls, texts, journals, paintings and items, be they historical, fictional, scientific or philosophical, all forbidden by the church, and they will remain hidden and safe in their library until the day the archive as a whole can be revealed and published safely.

Political ties

As it was founded with the Empire itself, house Engel is not a branch of another house as other smaller houses tend to be. House Engel does have strong ties to house Hevring, due to their shared familial crest and the proximity of their territories. Their biggest tie is in economy, as Hevring's lands are rich in precious metals and gemstones, which are then sent to house Engel to be turned into fine pieces and luxury goods by the artisans of the region. This agreement to work together has led to both houses being very wealthy.Because of the founding matriarch's wish for her family to remain out of political matters, their power and connections have remained limited as it is not considered an important part of the nobility in Adrestia. Since it is also a house led by women, there's been less expansion in relationships between noble houses. While houses Engel and Hevring have kept strong ties through the ages to keep generating wealth, this does not translate in the leaders of the houses being friends, with the current Duke and Count very barely knowing eachother. They have more of a silent agreement to let eachother be, while still relying on the other due to the profit their agreement makes them.Because House Engel is this insular, it very rarely has any conflict that would put it in danger. This lack of interest in branching out and participating in politics, instead leaving those matters to the other houses, has led to some people referring to it as a branch, or even a parasite of house Hevring, which in the eyes of some makes it a less legitimate noble house.Despite holding the title of Duke and Duchess, these are not reflective of their position within the empire itself and it's management, instead being titles passed down by the founder of the house, which were given more as a courtesy and held no real weight within the proper courts, as they're really more Barons/ Baronesses.

Documents in the Engel Archives

This is meant as a small collection of writings stored in the archives of the Engel estate, both from the past as well as some written by Élodie. Do keep in mind not all of them are accurate.

A letter to my Daughters

7th of the Red wolf Moon, year 103 of the Imperial calendarI intend to write this not just as a journal entry, but for posterity as well. As I wish for this to be read, I would introduce myself as well. My name is Aoife, of the Adrestian Empire, and I am a veteran of what is now known as the War of Heroes. I was one of those present during the battle of the plains of Tailtean, where lady Seiros struck the king of liberation down. The war finally ended five years ago, with the demise of lord Lycaon the first.Things are slow, the times are tense. We are beginning to get used to this new peace. The church and the empire are working together to ensure rebuilding is a priority, while still allowing for order amidst the chaos of a new world. It is odd, no fighting, no surviving. My family came to this continent as war raged through it, I grew with it, came to adulthood fighting, and now it’s all over. To say it is an unsettling peace would be putting it mildly. But I have settled down, on a small piece of unoccupied territory to the southwest, across the coast of the capital. As my beloved friend Cethleann has gone into slumber, I wished for a location that would allow me to visit her often. Oh, how I miss her so. What I would not give for her to wake and come to my home, so we may have tea and cookies again, not unlike how we enjoyed during the few precious moments we would get as the war raged on.But that aside, we’ve come to the reason I am penning this information down. I have observed in the past few years, how slowly the empire and lady Seiros have twisted the reality of the war. I fought these battles, I was present at these events. I remember my enemies’ faces all too clearly, yet the stories put down are different. The Elites were our enemies, they fought at the side of the king of liberation, and yet now they are told as heroes who fought beside the saints. It worries me greatly, but beyond having my concerns I cannot bring these worries to the attention of the church, for I know their power, and now I have a family of my own to keep in mind.So what am I to do, knowing that history will be lost forever? It seems this is the way of the world, and thus has been, for there’s little record of our own past history, before the founding of the empire, before the founding of the church. Were those stories deemed not worthy of remembering? Or has it been erased, for someone’s benefit?I believe this is the wrong thing to do, for how are we supposed to rebuild Fodlan, and make her a nation of peace if not by remembering our mistakes? And to change these records to fit our liking is only lying to ourselves. We who stood in the battlefield, are our memories deemed unworthy? The history we wrote in our own blood, forgotten? And so, what can I do, as just one woman? What I wish to make is a safe haven for the true history of our nation, however might Fodlan change beyond my days, I would have it written down, and stored where it will never be touched and adulterated by anyone, not by the Empire, not by the Church, not by our enemies. I would create an archive, full of the stories of the unsung, the true events of battles past and future, our political turmoils, our struggles and successes. But above all, one of truth. For I would not allow the past to be forgotten, as the future depends on it.Now of course, this is all wishful thinking. I do not have the power to impose this duty I have taken for myself onto my descendants, and even if I did have this power, I would not do it. For this is a task one must not take out of obligation, but out of love and passion for Fodlan. Love and passion cannot be taught, I cannot even say if my daughter will continue my work. If any of you do, I will be eternally grateful, and if you do not, I will be too, so long as you chase a passion as equal as mine for this nation. What I have now is merely a small collection, some dusty tomes, a few scrolls from the east, a few documents, journals from my own friends, and my own writings. A few of my most loyal retainers have gone far to find these, and they have continued this too. In the future I can only hope I have grown this collection into a true archive worthy of keeping, and for it to continue growing long past my time.Where this archive will go, however, only time shall tell. And perhaps one day, it will no longer need to be hidden, and instead be in the future emperor’s hands, so he may lead us to an era of prosperity, where we all know the truth.Signed by yours truly
First Duchess of the house of Engel, lady Aoife Engel

Trivia

- Worries very easily over small things. Very reserved, doesn't like to share too much about herself specifically unless she trusts the person.
- She's easily startled, and very easily manipulated. She's also fairly resentful, though it's something she tries to hide.
- Difficult to anger, would rather walk away.
- Spends a lot of time taking care of her hair. Because of her upbringing, during preskip it's fairly brittle and fragile.
- Her height is a result of her upbringing, as well.
- Growing up, she had to do a lot of sneaking around in the manor, especially when there were guests around. She learned how to practically erase her presence from this.
- Since her family often hosted noble gatherings, some other nobles in the academy know her older brothers, but not her. Her eldest brother, Auguste, has met most of the nobility.
- She is double jointed, which makes her joints naturally hyperflexible. While her skin is not stretchy, it does bruise more easily. Bruises and cuts also take longer to heal.
- She does not have a gag reflex, due to this she's very careful about what she eats, as if it's poisoned she cannot throw it up.
- Due to a childhood injury, she's physically incapable of having children of her own.
- Postgame, she's forced to using a cane or a wheelchair most of the time.

Character interactions

Linhardt von Hevring : They don't necessarily know eachother, but are aware of their families history. Élodie has a bit of a one sided rivalry that stems from jealousy with him, seeing as he has a crest of Cethleann.Flayn : Initially she's wary of the young girl, not knowing what to make of her. She's jealous of her too, at first, as she also has the crest of Cethleann, but the two find common ground and are friendly with eachother.
